Description

Conder Token - Leeds Halfpenny 1791. There are also words along the rim of the coin (similar to today's £2 coin). Please see photos for condition. Rare piece. Capsule included.

Obverse = Artis Nostrae Conditor

Reverse = Leeds Halfpenny 1791

Rim lettering = Payable at the Warehouse of Richard Paley XX

Conder Tokens were issued in the late 18th century (by private merchants) as there was a shortage of government issued coins to pay workers (especially during the Industrial Revolution). The Royal Mint undertook a massive Recoinage Programme in 1816. It then became illegal for employers to pay employees with their privately minted tokens. Severe penalties included jail time.
