Description

1812 Conder Token - Yorkshire Barnsley. Struck slightly off centre. Please see photos for condition.

Obverse = Payable At Jackson & Listers Warehouse, Barnsley, Penny Token

Reverse = Detailed view of a weaver working in a large box weaving loom and no lettering

Conder Tokens were issued in the late 18th century (by private merchants) as there was a shortage of government issued coins to pay workers (especially during the Industrial Revolution). The Royal Mint undertook a massive Recoinage Programme in 1816. It then became illegal for employers to pay employees with their privately minted tokens. Severe penalties included jail time.
