Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the third coin in the beautiful new series of 50p coins featuring Sea Creatures issued on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territory.
The third coin in the collection features the Emperor Angelfish, the best known of all saltwater angelfish. Their distinctive colours are truly regal with its yellow and royal blue horizontal lines streaming across their frame.
The Emperor Angelfish is a species of reef-associated marine angelfish, native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are unusually beautiful both as a juvenile and as adults. Adults are deep bodied and slightly elongated and can be as big as 40cm in the wild. The pretty juveniles are black with light blue and white curved stripes and a honeycomb pattern on the top and bottom fin and tail made up of black spots edged in blue. Because of this distinction until 1933, juvenile Emperor Angelfish were thought to be a separate species. This angelfish is generally associated with stable populations and faces no major threats of extinction.
The British Indian Ocean Territory comprises the 50 islands of the Chagos Archipelago which is only a total area of 44 square kilometres but the territorial seas cover over 60,000 square kilometres containing coral reefs which comprise over 10% of Indian Ocean reef cover and the cleanest seawater ever recorded. This means that the waters around Chagos are a vital natural laboratory for scientists to learn how a healthy reef lives and to study the diverse wildlife who live in or visit these waters as breeding and feeding grounds for all sea creatures.
The coin is available in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish with the Emperor Angelfish portrayed in full colour really bringing this recognisable angelfish to life. A special colour album, which is sold separately, has been designed to house all six coins of the collection. The coin is also available in coloured Proof Sterling Silver.
The obverse of the coin features the Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
