- Issued on behalf of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

- The coin itself features the Royal Coat of Arms which is the official Coat of Arms of the British Monarch, also known as the Royal Arms. These arms are used by Her Majesty in her official capacity. The current Royal Arms are a combination of the arms of the former kingdoms that make up the United Kingdom and can be traced back to the first arms of the kings of England and the kings of Scotland and go back as far as Richard I of England, 1189 and William I King of Scots, 1214.
- The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.
- To celebrate the 95th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II this year, we are issuing a new 50 pence on behalf of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands. In a tradition that dates back to 1748 which was started by King George II, the Queen has two birthdays each year.
- The first is her actual birthday on 21st April and the second is the official birthday which always takes place on the second Saturday in June. The tradition was started as King George II’s birthday was in November and it was not a good time of year to hold a birthday parade. The Queen’s Birthday widely celebrated in countries to which she is Head of State including UK Overseas Territories such as South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands.
- Local events will be held in South Georgia and in the UK. The Queen’s Birthday will be marked by a 41-gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21-gun salute in Windsor Castle Great Park and a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London which is followed by the Trooping the Colour ceremony in central London which is due to take place on 12th June.
