- To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, Pobjoy Mint is proud to release this special 2019 Cupro Nickel Diamond Finished 50p coin on behalf of the Government of Gibraltar.
- The design shows the coastline of Normandy with the five beaches
involved in the invasion indicated on the land. The three national flags
of the Allied Forces (United States of America, United Kingdom and
Canada) are shown. Above this, the wording ‘1944-2019 D-DAY’ is shown
below the outline of a World War II ship indicating the anniversary.
- On this day some 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops landed on fives beaches along a 50 mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. The amphibious landings were preceded by extensive aerial and naval bombardment and an airborne assault with the landing of 24,000 US, British and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight. Allied infantry and armoured divisions began landing on the coast of France at 0630 hours.
