- Pobjoy Mint is excited to announce the release of the penultimate Turtle in the British Indian Ocean Territory 50p Series. This stunning new coin features the Loggerhead Turtle.
- The Loggerhead Turtle is the world's largest hard-shelled turtle and gets its name from its broad, strong head. Referred to as generalist predators, they use their strong heads and powerful jaws to crush the shells of conches, lobsters and other hard-shelled invertebrates.
- The design on the coin itself features the Loggerhead Turtle swimming in the ocean. The obverse of the coin features the Pobjoy Mint exclusive Effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
- The Loggerhead Turtle spends most of its life in saltwater, with only females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs. This particular species has a low reproductive rate, with females laying an average of four egg clutches before being unable to produce eggs for two to three years.
- Like all sea turtles, Loggerhead Turtles face many threats that impact upon their population numbers.
