- Penguins are the most common birds in the Antarctic with some colonies having populations that are larger than some cities. They survive in exceptionally harsh conditions but the penguin is high evolved to be able to live in the coldest of places. To be able to withstand the endless hours standing on the ice, the blood flow to the penguin’s feet is tightly controlled, reducing the flow in the extremely cold environment. It is therefore no wonder that the Penguin is often recognised as the emblem of Antarctica.
- We are delighted to announce the release of the first coin in a stunning new series of five coins featuring the Penguins of Antarctica. The first coin in the series of five coins features the Adélie Penguin.
- The design on the coin itself features a pair of Adélie penguins. The Pobjoy Mint exclusive Effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the coin.
