- Penguins are the most common birds in the Antarctic with some colonies having populations that are larger than some cities. They survive in exceptionally harsh conditions but the penguin is high evolved to be able to live in the coldest of places. To be able to withstand the endless hours standing on the ice, the blood flow to the penguin’s feet is tightly controlled, reducing the flow in the extremely cold environment. It is therefore no wonder that the Penguin is often recognised as the emblem of Antarctica.
- Penguins were originally considered to be very primitive birds and a party of men from Captain Scott’s famous expedition when on what they called ‘the worst journey in the world’ to prove this point. However, this theory was wrong and penguins are known to be highly evolved to enable them to live in the coldest places on our planet. Although they have feathers and wings, penguins cannot fly. Instead they have evolved into the most proficient divers and swimmers of all birds – they are literally able to fly through the sea. Pobjoy Mint is therefore excited to announce the release of the third coin in the series of five coins featuring the Penguins of Antarctica which continues to be exceptionally popular with collectors and penguin lovers alike.
- Penguins cope very well in the cold which is why they are very much at home in the Antarctic, especially as some of them breed in the coldest conditions on the planet. Their short outer feathers overlap each other, much like the tiles on a roof, which forms a thick, waterproof layer. Underneath are fluffier feathers which provide warmth. As a rule, the larger the penguin is, the easier it is for it to conserve heat. It is hard to believe that some breeds are so good at keeping warm that they do sometimes encounter the problem of overheating during the Summer. Pobjoy Mint is therefore excited to announce the release of the fourth coin in the series of five coins featuring the Penguins of Antarctica which continues to be exceptionally popular with collectors and penguin lovers alike. The penultimate coin in the series of five coins features the Gentoo Penguin.
- The Macaroni Penguin has bright red eyes, and their beak is thick and orange, but on each side a fleshy pink area is visible. Known for its distinctive yellow crest the macaroni is a large penguin that moults once a year. With the crest an adult bird has an average height of around 70cm, the weight can vary drastically dependant on the time of year and the sex of the penguin.
- The population is estimated at around 18 million which is a substantial decline in recent years recorded across numerous locations. Like most other penguins the Macaroni is a social animal in its nesting and behaviour.
- The design on the coin itself features a male and female Macaroni penguin. The Pobjoy Mint exclusive Effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the coin.
- The coin is available in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish with the penguins portrayed in colour. *This coin is sold in a 50pence shaped capsule inside a blue pouch.
