Here you have an opportunity to buy a carefully selected 1967 Sixpence coin in perfect Uncirculated condition. In fact these are as close as you can get to Brilliant Uncirculated and have come direct from the Royal Mint in 1967 and have been safely stored since then. These were the last year of circulation issue to show the first head of our late Queen by designer Mary Gillick.
The Sixpence was a British, initially silver coin first struck in 1551, during the short reign of Edward VI, which eventually ceased production in 1967 just 4 years before decimalisation. The coins being sold are just 19.4mm in diameter. The popularity of the Sixpence was so overwhelming that, despite not having a decimal equivalent i.e. value 2.5p, it was continued to be used by public demand right up until 1980.
During the latter part of the 18th Century there was a huge demand for silver coinage. The French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) made the silver and gold shortages even worse.
During the reign of King George II a number of issues were designed by John Sigismund Tanner, who became the Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint and it has been suggested that this is the origin of the nick name "Tanner', which was a popular name for the coin until it's removal from circulation in 1980, nine years after decimalisation in February 1971.
During the latter part of George III's long reign (1760-1820), the 'Great Recoinage' took place in 1816 at the Royal Mint in Tower Hill London, where the coins were first struck in 92.5% silver and remained legal tender until 1980. In 1920 the price of silver rose and all sixpences struck between 1920 and 1946 were in 50% silver.
From 1947 onwards until 1967 the coins were struck using an alloy called CuNi which was 75% copper and 25% Nickel, as silver stocks were needed to help repay the lease/loan agreement given to our country by the USA for assisting us to help win the War in 1945.
These sixpences in this listing, show the first head of the late Queen (known as the 1st Portrait), by designer Mary Gillick with her initials 'MG' on the base of the truncation. The reverse design shows a garland of interlaced rose, thistle, shamrock and leek. The rose at the top between two leaves, the leek on the left, the thistle on the right, the shamrock at the bottom between small shamrock and leef. The design shows the initials EF and CT in the lower field representing the initials of the designers Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas.
These specific coins have never been in circulation so you could not get a nearly sixty year old coin in better condition.
